Based on the geographical location of this project, what HVAC recommendations do you have?
I am an HVAC expert with over 20 years of experience in HVAC system design, construction, and operation and maintenance, and have participated in multiple large commercial complex and five-star hotel projects. The "geographic location" you mentioned is an important basis for HVAC system design and directly affects cold and heat source selection, load calculation, and system configuration. Different climate zones (such as hot summer and cold winter, severe cold, and mild zones) have significantly different requirements for air-conditioning systems. If local conditions are not taken into account, it can easily lead to high energy consumption, poor comfort, and even equipment selection errors.
1. System Recommendations Based on Climate Zones
According to Article 3.0.1 of GB 50736-2012 Code for Design of Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning of Civil Buildings, China is divided into five climate zones: severe cold, cold, hot summer and cold winter, hot summer and warm winter, and mild. Taking common projects as examples:
- Hot summer and cold winter zone (such as Shanghai and Nanjing): Both summer cooling and winter heating need to be considered. It is recommended to use air-cooled heat pump units or ground-source heat pump systems. For example, in a Shanghai hotel project I participated in, the winter heating load was dominant, and the ground-source heat pump saved more than 40% energy compared with a gas boiler and also complied with local environmental protection policies.
- Severe cold zone (such as Harbin): The winter heating period is long, and the summer cooling demand is low. Centralized gas boilers + chillers are recommended, or air-source heat pumps + auxiliary electric heating may be used (however, attention must be paid to COP degradation under low-temperature conditions; Article 8.1.2 of GB 50736 emphasizes the need to check extreme temperatures).
- Hot summer and warm winter zone (such as Guangzhou): Cooling is dominant, and the heating demand is very small. Water-cooled screw chillers + cooling towers or variable-frequency multi-split units may be selected. For example, in a Guangzhou commercial project, because of year-round high humidity, we additionally configured an independent fresh air dehumidification system to avoid condensation problems.
2. Specific Design Parameters and Application of Standards
- Load calculation: According to Article 6.1.1 of GB 50736, the hourly cooling load calculation method shall be used, considering the building envelope, occupant density, equipment heat dissipation, etc. Geographic location affects solar radiation intensity (for example, high-altitude areas have strong sunshine, so the shading coefficient needs to be increased).
- Fresh air volume: Article 3.0.6 of GB 50736 requires that the fresh air volume in densely occupied places be ≥30 m³/(h·person). In heavily polluted areas (such as the haze-prone areas of North China), it is recommended to add air purification devices, such as medium-efficiency filtration + electrostatic precipitation.
- Efficiency of cold and heat sources: According to Article 4.2.2 of GB 50189-2015 Design Standard for Energy Efficiency of Public Buildings, the COP of chillers shall be ≥5.6 (taking rated cooling capacity ≤528 kW as an example). In coastal high-humidity areas, it is recommended to use variable-frequency centrifugal chillers to cope with partial-load fluctuations.
3. Actual Engineering Cases
A five-star hotel project in Beijing (cold zone) originally adopted gas boilers + chillers. After analysis of the local water resource shortage (cooling towers were prohibited), we adjusted the design to a multi-split unit + fresh air heat recovery system (Article 7.3.7 of GB 50736 requires heat recovery efficiency ≥60%). In winter, buried pipes were used to assist heating; in summer, condensation heat recovery was used to prepare domestic hot water, achieving an annual energy-saving rate of more than 30%. During construction, special attention was paid to pipe insulation (Article 9.2.1 of GB 50243-2016 Code for Acceptance of Construction Quality of Ventilation and Air Conditioning Works requires that the insulation layer thickness prevent condensation), avoiding condensation water damaging the ceiling.
4. Recommendations for the Operation and Maintenance Stage
Geographic location also affects operation and maintenance strategies: in high-altitude areas, fan pressure must be checked (Article 6.5.1 of GB 50019); in coastal salt-spray environments, corrosion protection of cooling towers must be strengthened (for example, stainless steel materials should be used); in high-temperature areas, condensers must be cleaned regularly (Article 7.2.7 of GB 50736 emphasizes at least once a year).
Summary: According to the project's geographic location, first determine the climate zone, then select a suitable cold and heat source system, and strictly follow standards such as GB 50736 and GB 50189 for load calculation and equipment selection. At the same time, in combination with local energy policies (such as prohibiting high-energy-consumption equipment) and environmental protection requirements (such as carbon emission limits), priority should be given to efficient and energy-saving solutions (such as heat pumps and heat recovery). Actual cases show that adapting to local conditions can significantly reduce operating costs.
The above are reference opinions. The actual situation of the project still needs to be further comprehensively evaluated and implemented in combination with specific operating conditions, site conditions, and other factors.
