Design Highlights of Hotel Parking Lot Management Systems and License Plate Recognition

I am David Zhou, a low-voltage/intelligent systems expert specializing in structured cabling, low-voltage systems, and intelligent system design. As an important part of hotel intelligence, the parking lot management system's design directly affects guest experience, operational efficiency, and safety management. In hotel projects, the parking lot is not only a place for vehicle parking but also the first-impression window of hotel service; therefore, the system design must balance convenience, reliability, and integration with the hotel's overall intelligent platform. Below, I will combine standards and practice to elaborate in detail on the design points and the application of license plate recognition technology.

Design Points Analysis

1. System Architecture and Function Planning
According to Article 6.0.4 of "GB 50314-2015 Standard for Intelligent Building Design", the parking lot management system should provide vehicle entry/exit management, billing, guidance, and information display functions. In hotel scenarios, it must additionally support fast passage for VIP guests, temporary visitor management, and linkage with the hotel PMS (Property Management System). During design, I usually adopt a "one-entry-one-exit" or "multiple-entry-multiple-exit" mode, with each entrance and exit equipped with a license plate recognition all-in-one machine, barrier gate, ground induction loop, and display screen. For example, in a five-star hotel project, I designed a dual-lane entrance (including one dedicated VIP lane), enabling seamless passage through license plate recognition while uploading data to the hotel's central management platform.

2. Key Points of License Plate Recognition Technology
License plate recognition is the core and must achieve a high recognition rate (≥99%) and low latency (≤0.5 s). According to "GA/T 833-2016 Technical Specification for Automatic Image Recognition of Motor Vehicle License Plates", the system should support blue plates, yellow plates, new-energy green plates, and Hong Kong/Macao plates. In actual engineering, I recommend using high-definition cameras (2 megapixels or above) + fill lights + embedded algorithm modules to avoid latency caused by reliance on cloud processing. For example, at a hotel in Shenzhen, I deployed the Hikvision DS-TCG205 series with infrared fill lighting; even at night or in severe weather, the recognition rate still reached 99.5%. In addition, anti-counterfeiting functions must be considered, such as triggering manual review or secondary verification when an abnormal license plate (e.g., blurred or obscured) is recognized.

3. Integration with Hotel Systems
According to Article 4.1.2 of "GB 50311-2016 Code for Engineering Design of Generic Cabling Systems", low-voltage systems should reserve integration interfaces. The parking lot system must be linked with the hotel PMS, room control system (RCU), and security surveillance. For example, after a VIP guest's license plate is pre-registered, the system automatically recognizes it and opens the barrier gate, while pushing parking space information to the guest room TV via the room control system. In a hotel project in Hangzhou, I connected the parking lot data to the BA system via the OPC UA protocol, enabling real-time display of parking space occupancy and energy optimization (e.g., lighting linkage).

4. Equipment Selection and Construction Workmanship
Equipment must be highly weather-resistant and adapt to the humid, dusty environment of hotel underground garages. Barrier gates are recommended to use DC brushless motors (service life ≥5 million cycles), and license plate recognition cameras must have IP67 protection rating. During construction, according to Article 6.3.2 of "GB 50348-2018 Technical Standard for Security and Protection Engineering", ground induction loops should be embedded 50 mm below the road surface, avoiding cutting rebar; cables should use Category 5e shielded twisted pair (CAT5e SFTP) and be protected by galvanized conduit. For example, at a hotel in Shanghai, because I did not consider garage moisture protection, condensation formed inside the cameras; the problem was only solved after adding moisture-proof covers and heating modules.

5. Operation, Maintenance, and Upgrades
During hotel operation, the license plate database (e.g., newly added VIP vehicles) must be updated regularly and the recognition algorithm calibrated. According to "GB/T 22239-2019 Baseline for Classified Protection of Cybersecurity", the system should provide log auditing and anti-tampering functions. For example, at a hotel in Beijing, I deployed a remote O&M platform that can monitor equipment status in real time and support OTA upgrades of the license plate recognition algorithm, reducing on-site maintenance costs.

Practical Engineering Case

Case: Parking Lot System of a Five-Star Resort Hotel in Guangzhou

Summary

The design of a hotel parking lot management system should focus on high reliability of license plate recognition, seamless system integration, and convenient operation and maintenance. The core is to select high-performance equipment, follow relevant standards, reserve integration interfaces, and verify the effectiveness of the scheme through cases. The above are reference opinions. The actual project situation still needs further comprehensive evaluation and implementation in combination with specific operating conditions, site conditions, and other factors.
