Selection criteria and opening direction requirements for hotel fire doors and fire windows
I am fire safety expert Alexander Li. The selection and opening direction of fire doors and fire windows are core elements of hotel fire safety design, directly affecting the efficiency of occupant evacuation during a fire and the effectiveness of fire compartments. In hotel projects, such components often fail acceptance or even compromise operational safety due to improper selection or incorrect installation. Below, drawing on GB50016 Code for Fire Protection Design of Buildings and years of engineering experience, I will analyze in detail their selection criteria and opening direction requirements.
Selection Criteria
The selection of fire doors and fire windows is mainly based on Articles 6.2.1, 6.2.2 and 5.5.32 of GB50016, combined with the special functional areas of hotels:
1. Fire door ratings:
- Class A fire doors: used for fire walls, equipment rooms (such as fire pump rooms, power distribution rooms, generator rooms), refuge floors (rooms), and doors between evacuation stairwells and corridors. For example, basement boiler rooms in hotels must use Class A fire doors with a fire resistance rating of not less than 1.5 hours.
- Class B fire doors: used for fire compartment partition walls along evacuation corridors, enclosed stairwell doors, smoke-proof stairwell vestibule doors, and guest room areas. Doors from hotel guest rooms to corridors are usually Class B, with a fire resistance rating of not less than 1.0 hour.
- Class C fire doors: used for inspection doors of pipe shafts (such as cable shafts and pipe shafts), with a fire resistance rating of not less than 0.5 hours.
- Class A fire windows: used for openings in fire walls, or glass curtain wall areas on hotel exterior walls requiring fire separation. Fire resistance rating not less than 1.5 hours.
- Class B fire windows: used for exterior windows of refuge floors (rooms), or daylighting windows between hotel atriums and corridors. Fire resistance rating not less than 1.0 hour.
- Class C fire windows: used for observation windows between ordinary fire compartments, with a fire resistance rating of not less than 0.5 hours.
- Fire doors of hotel guest rooms shall have a self-closing function (Article 6.2.3 of GB50016) and be equipped with door closers to prevent them from being left open during a fire.
- Fire windows shall use fixed sashes or sashes with automatic closing function, and the glass must be fire-resistant glass (such as laminated fire-resistant glass) complying with GB15763.1.
- On hotel evacuation routes, fire doors should avoid large-area glass windows unless fire-resistant glass is used.
Opening Direction Requirements
According to Articles 6.2.3 and 6.2.4 of GB50016, the opening direction of fire doors must follow the principles below:
1. Opening in the evacuation direction:
- All fire doors shall open in the direction of occupant evacuation. For example, fire doors from hotel guest rooms to corridors must open toward the corridor; doors from corridors to evacuation stairwells must open toward the stairwell. This is to prevent door leaves from obstructing escape routes during a fire.
- Exception: if the doors of enclosed stairwells or smoke-proof stairwells serve two-way evacuation, they may open in both directions, but it must be ensured that the door leaves do not encroach on the clear evacuation width (Article 5.5.19 of GB50016).
- Fire windows are usually fixed sashes to prevent chain reactions caused by thermal radiation during a fire. If openable sashes are required (such as exterior windows of refuge floors), they should open inward (toward the interior) to avoid forming obstacles on the outside.
- I once participated in a five-star hotel renovation project where the original design had fire doors on the guest room corridor opening into the guest rooms, which was judged non-compliant during fire acceptance. After rectification, all door leaves were changed to open toward the corridor, and door closers and sequential closers (for double-leaf doors) were added, and the project finally passed acceptance. This reminds us that the opening direction must strictly comply with the code; otherwise, evacuation efficiency will be affected.
Concluding Summary
The selection of hotel fire doors and fire windows must strictly match the ratings (Class A, B, C) according to fire compartments, functional areas and fire resistance ratings; the opening direction must be uniformly toward the evacuation direction, and the self-closing function must be ensured. During construction, Articles 6.2.3 and 5.5.32 of GB50016 must be followed to avoid selection errors or installation deviations.
The above are reference opinions. The actual project situation still needs to be further comprehensively evaluated and implemented in combination with specific working conditions, site conditions and other factors.
