Vibration and noise reduction design for hotel plumbing systems: pipe supports and hangers and flexible joints
I am Daniel Wang, a water supply and drainage specialist. Vibration and noise reduction design for hotel water supply and drainage systems is a key element in enhancing guest comfort, especially for high-end hotels, where noise and vibration directly affect the acoustic environment quality of guest rooms, restaurants and meeting areas, and may even trigger complaints. Proper selection and installation of pipe supports and hangers and flexible joints are the core measures for controlling mechanical noise and structure-borne sound, and are directly related to the stability of system operation and the operator's reputation.
Importance of Vibration and Noise Reduction Design
In hotel projects, vibration and noise generated by water supply and drainage systems (such as water pumps, pipe water flow, and valve opening/closing), if not effectively isolated, will be transmitted to sensitive areas through the building structure. For example, after a certain five-star hotel opened, low-frequency humming frequently occurred on the guest room floors; investigation revealed that the domestic water pump room had no vibration isolation foundation, and the pipe supports did not use elastic pads, causing vibration to propagate along the floor slab. Therefore, the design of supports and hangers and flexible joints must strictly follow the codes and be optimized in combination with actual operating conditions.
Key Points of Pipe Support and Hanger Design
Supports and hangers are the connection points between pipes and the building structure, and their vibration reduction design needs to consider the following aspects:
1. Standard Reference: According to Article 3.3.7 of the Code for Acceptance of Construction Quality of Building Water Supply, Drainage and Heating Engineering (GB 50242-2002), pipe supports and hangers shall be firmly fixed, and pads shall be provided at the contact points with pipes to prevent wear and noise. Meanwhile, Article 4.2.5 of the Code for Sound Insulation Design of Civil Buildings (GB 50118-2010) requires that sound insulation sleeves shall be provided where water supply and drainage pipes pass through floor slabs or walls.
2. Selection of Elastic Supports and Hangers: For pump inlets and outlets and the base of risers, spring vibration-damping supports and hangers or rubber vibration isolation pads should be used. For example, in the air-conditioning plant room of a hotel podium, a 10 mm thick rubber pad needs to be added at the bottom of the domestic water supply riser support to avoid rigid connection transmitting vibration. In an actual case, after spring supports and hangers were used for the pipes in the pool plant room of a resort hotel, the noise in the guest rooms below dropped from 45 dB to 28 dB.
3. Fixed and Guide Supports: Guide supports shall be provided every 6-8 meters for horizontal pipes to limit displacement while avoiding resonance. For hot water pipes, thermal expansion compensation needs to be considered, and sliding clearance shall be reserved in the supports to prevent noise caused by stress concentration.
Key Points of Flexible Joint Design
Flexible joints are used to absorb pipe displacement and vibration, and are mainly installed at equipment interfaces such as water pumps and chillers:
1. Code Requirements: According to Article 3.8.6 of the Standard for Design of Building Water Supply and Drainage (GB 50015-2019), flexible joints shall be provided for pump inlet and outlet pipes, and their nominal pressure shall not be lower than the working pressure of the piping system. Meanwhile, fire pump systems shall comply with Article 5.1.13 of the Technical Code for Fire Protection Water Supply and Hydrant Systems (GB 50974-2014), which requires flexible joints on the suction and discharge pipes of water pumps.
2. Types and Layout:
- Rubber flexible joints: Suitable for domestic water supply systems, with working pressure of 1.0-1.6 MPa, and corrosion-resistant EPDM material shall be selected. For example, in the domestic water pump room of a hotel, a flexible rubber joint was installed at the outlet of each pump, effectively isolating the pulsating vibration from pump operation.
- Bellows expansion joints: Used for hot water systems or fire protection systems, with axial displacement compensation to be considered. Note that in fire protection systems, stainless steel material shall be used and fire resistance requirements shall be met (such as Article 5.1.13 of GB 50974-2014).
Actual Engineering Case
In a mixed-use hotel project in a city, a domestic water pump room was located on the second basement level, directly below the executive lounge. At the design stage, I recommended the following scheme:
- Spring vibration isolators were provided for the pump foundation, and flexible sealing filler was used where pipes pass through walls;
- DN150 rubber flexible joints were installed at pump inlets and outlets, and 5 mm rubber pads were added to all pipe supports;
- Spring supports and hangers were provided at the top of risers to compensate for vertical displacement.
Summary
The vibration and noise reduction design of hotel water supply and drainage systems needs to be comprehensively controlled from three aspects: elastic isolation of supports and hangers, selection and installation of flexible joints, and sealing where pipes pass through walls. Spring or rubber vibration-damping types should be preferred for supports and hangers; flexible joints shall be provided at equipment interfaces in accordance with the codes and must not be misused as supporting components. Through refined design, the acoustic environment quality can be significantly improved and complaints during operation can be avoided.
The above are reference opinions. The actual project situation still needs to be further comprehensively evaluated and implemented in combination with specific operating conditions, site conditions and other factors.
