What are the requirements for setting up a hotel domestic water pump room? Clear height, drainage, and vibration isolation design
I am Daniel Wang, a water supply and drainage specialist. The design of the hotel domestic water pump room is a core element of the hotel water supply system, directly affecting water supply safety, equipment service life and operational noise control. Especially for star-rated hotels, vibration isolation design is key to customer experience. The following are the specific requirements based on GB50015-2019 "Standard for Design of Building Water Supply and Drainage" and engineering practice.
1. Clear Height Requirements
According to Article 3.8.6 of GB50015-2019, the clear height of the pump room (from floor to beam soffit or duct bottom) shall meet the requirements for equipment installation, maintenance and handling. General recommendations:
- Minimum clear height: not less than 3.0 m; if vertical pumps or large units are used, ≥3.5 m is required to ensure operating space for lifting equipment (such as electric hoists) and piping valves.
- Engineering experience: In a five-star hotel project in Hangzhou, the original design clear height was only 2.8 m, which made it impossible to use standard forklifts during later maintenance, leaving only manual handling with extremely low efficiency. It was later adjusted to 3.2 m with a reserved maintenance access, avoiding similar problems.
2. Drainage Requirements
Article 3.8.7 of GB50015-2019 specifies that the pump room shall be provided with drainage facilities to prevent water accumulation from damaging equipment.
- Drainage trench and sump pit: The floor shall have a slope of 0.5%–1% toward the drainage trench, with trench width ≥200 mm and depth ≥150 mm, and a sump pit (volume ≥1.0 m³) at the end, equipped with a submersible sewage pump (flow ≥10 m³/h, head sufficient to discharge to the outdoor network).
- Backflow prevention measures: The drainage pipe outlet shall be provided with a check valve or backflow preventer to avoid sewage backflow.
- Case: A hotel in Shanghai once had insufficient drainage trench slope, causing the pump foundation to be soaked for a long time and the motor insulation to degrade. After rectification, the slope was adjusted to 1% and a liquid level alarm device was added, completely solving the problem.
3. Vibration Isolation Design
Vibration isolation is the top priority in hotel pump room design, because vibration and noise will be transmitted through the structure to guest rooms, affecting customer experience. According to Article 3.8.13 of GB50015-2019 and JGJ/T 170-2009 "Code for Design of Sound Insulation and Vibration Isolation of Buildings":
- Foundation vibration isolation: The pump foundation shall adopt a concrete inertia block (thickness ≥300 mm), with rubber vibration isolation pads or spring isolators underneath, and the isolation efficiency shall be ≥85%. For variable-frequency pumps, adjustable spring isolators are recommended to cope with resonance frequencies at different speeds.
- Pipe isolation: Rubber flexible joints (length ≥200 mm) shall be provided at pump inlet and outlet; elastic hangers or isolation brackets shall be used for pipe supports; flexible sleeves (filled with rock wool) shall be provided where pipes penetrate walls or floor slabs.
- Machine room sound insulation: Walls shall adopt double-layer sound insulation walls (e.g., 240 mm brick wall + 50 mm rock wool + 100 mm air layer), and doors shall be sound insulation doors (sound insulation ≥35 dB) to prevent noise leakage.
- Case: After the opening of a hotel in Shenzhen, the top-floor presidential suite complained of low-frequency humming. Inspection found that the pump room was located directly below it and the foundation isolation pads had aged and failed. After replacement with pre-compressed spring isolators, the noise dropped from 45 dB to below 30 dB, and the complaints disappeared.
Summary
The design of the hotel domestic water pump room requires coordinated consideration of three major elements: clear height (≥3.0 m), drainage (slope + sump pit + submersible sewage pump) and vibration isolation (foundation + piping + sound insulation), none of which can be omitted. For vibration isolation design in particular, acoustic simulation before construction is recommended, with maintenance space reserved.
The above are reference opinions. The actual project situation still needs further comprehensive evaluation and implementation in combination with specific working conditions, site conditions and other factors.
