What are the design code requirements for hotel emergency lighting and evacuation indication systems?

I am electrical expert James Li. As a densely occupied public building, a hotel's emergency lighting and evacuation indication system is a core safeguard for life safety. I have participated in the electrical design review of multiple five-star hotel projects and am well aware of the catastrophic consequences that system failure can cause. According to GB 51309-2018 "Technical Standard for Fire Emergency Lighting and Evacuate Indicating System" and GB 50016-2014 (2018 Edition) "Code for Fire Protection Design of Buildings", the design must be strictly controlled from four dimensions: power supply reliability, illuminance standards, sign placement, and system control.

First, **Power Supply and System Type**: Hotels are densely occupied premises and must adopt a **centralized power supply, centralized control** system (GB 51309-2018 Clause 3.1.2). In a five-star hotel project in Hangzhou that I participated in, the initial design used self-contained battery type, which was later mandatorily changed to centralized power supply type after fire protection review, avoiding excessive later maintenance and battery aging risks. The emergency lighting distribution box should be supplied by a dedicated circuit of the fire protection power source, and non-fire loads are strictly prohibited from being connected (GB 50016 Clause 10.1.6).

Second, **Illuminance and Duration**: The minimum horizontal illuminance at floor level in evacuation corridors shall not be lower than 1.0 lx (GB 50016 Clause 10.3.2), and in stairwells, antechambers, or shared antechambers shall not be lower than 5.0 lx. For hotel guest rooms, although there is no mandatory illuminance requirement, it is recommended to install evacuation indication signs above the door, and the continuous power supply duration of all emergency luminaires shall not be less than 90 minutes (GB 51309-2018 Clause 3.2.4). In an actual project, due to insufficient illuminance calculation, I added wall-mounted luminaires at stairwell corners to ensure compliance with the 5 lx requirement.

Third, **Sign Placement**: The spacing of evacuation indication signs shall not exceed 20 meters, and at corners shall not exceed 1 meter (GB 51309-2018 Clause 3.2.9). When hotel corridors are long, additional sign luminaires need to be added in the middle. Special attention: **floor-mounted sign luminaires** are often overlooked in hotels, but GB 51309-2018 Clause 3.2.7 requires that when the evacuation corridor length exceeds 20 meters and there is no natural lighting, visually continuous lighting evacuation indication signs (such as buried luminaires) should be added. In a Beijing hotel project, because floor signs were not provided, rectification was required during acceptance, adding buried luminaires and conduits.

Fourth, **System Control and Linkage**: A centralized control system needs to be linked with the automatic fire alarm system, automatically illuminating all emergency luminaires upon receiving a fire signal (GB 51309-2018 Clause 3.7.3). I recommend that in hotel design, the power supply incoming line of the emergency lighting distribution box be provided with overload protection that does not cut off, with only short-circuit protection, to prevent accidental tripping that could cause system failure.

Summary: The design of hotel emergency lighting and evacuation indication systems must strictly follow GB 51309-2018 and GB 50016, with emphasis on ensuring centralized power supply and centralized control, compliant illuminance (corridor 1 lx/stairwell 5 lx), reasonable sign spacing, and reliable linkage control. The above are reference opinions. The actual project situation still needs further comprehensive evaluation and implementation in combination with specific working conditions, site conditions, and other factors.
