What are the key points for quality control in air-conditioning duct insulation construction? How can common quality defects be prevented and remedied?

I am an HVAC expert. Air-conditioning duct insulation construction is a key part of HVAC system energy savings and condensation prevention, directly affecting system operating efficiency, energy consumption and indoor environmental quality. According to Article 11.3.3 of GB 50736-2012 Code for Design of Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning of Civil Buildings and Article 9.2.1 of GB 50243-2016 Code for Acceptance of Construction Quality of Ventilation and Air Conditioning Works, insulation construction must strictly control materials, workmanship and acceptance. Based on many years of engineering experience, the following is a detailed analysis of quality control points and prevention and treatment measures for common defects.

**Quality Control Points:**

1. **Material selection and incoming inspection**: Insulation materials must meet the design requirements for thermal conductivity (generally ≤0.035 W/(m·K)), thickness and fire rating (not lower than Class B1). According to Article 9.1.2 of GB 50243-2016, certificates of conformity and test reports must be checked upon arrival, and thickness, density and flame-retardant performance must be sampled and re-tested. For example, in a five-star hotel project, I once found that a batch of rubber-plastic insulation cotton had a thickness deviation of up to 10%, and immediately required replacement, avoiding the risk of condensation later.

2. **Substrate treatment and cleaning**: The pipe surface must be dry, free of rust and oil stains. According to Article 9.2.2 of GB 50243-2016, after applying anti-corrosion paint (such as red lead anti-rust paint), it must be thoroughly dried. In an actual case, a commercial complex failed to clean welding slag, causing local detachment of the insulation layer and high later rework costs.

3. **Insulation layer laying and sealing**: Insulation pipe shells must be laid with staggered joints, and joints must be bonded with special glue or sealed with aluminum foil tape to ensure no air layer. Special-shaped parts such as valves and flanges should be wrapped with prefabricated insulation shells or on-site cut pieces, with thickness consistent with the pipe. According to Article 11.3.4 of GB 50736-2012, the vapor barrier (such as aluminum foil) must be continuous and complete to prevent water vapor permeation.

4. **Condensation and moisture prevention treatment**: In humid environments (such as basements), a vapor barrier layer must be added. In a data center project in Shanghai, because no vapor barrier layer was made outside the insulation layer of the chilled water pipe, condensation dripped in summer, and the problem was only solved after adding a 0.3 mm thick polyethylene film.

5. **Fixing and protection**: A metal or plastic protective shell must be provided outside the insulation layer, and pipe clamps must be installed for fixing (spacing ≤1.5 m). According to Article 9.2.5 of GB 50243-2016, protective shell joints should overlap in the direction of water flow to prevent rainwater infiltration.

**Common Quality Defects and Prevention:**

1. **Insulation layer detachment or cracking**: The cause is mostly unclean substrate or failure of adhesive. Prevention: Clean the pipe surface with solvent before construction; glue must be used within its validity period and applied evenly. In a hospital project, expired glue caused large-area detachment, and all work was redone using hot-melt tape.

2. **Condensation dripping**: Commonly seen when insulation thickness is insufficient or joints are not tight. Prevention: Construct according to design thickness, focus on inspecting elbows and tees, and increase thickness by 10-20% if necessary. For example, in an office building, because the chilled water pipe insulation thickness was only 20 mm (design 30 mm), condensation was severe in summer, and the problem was solved after thickening to 40 mm.

3. **Abnormal outer surface temperature of insulation layer**: If the metal protective shell overlaps improperly or is not sealed, a cold bridge is easily formed. Prevention: Fill protective shell joints with silicone sealant and avoid direct contact with pipe supports. In a shopping mall project, because wooden pads were not added to the supports, cold bridge condensation occurred, and rubber gaskets were later installed to eliminate it.

4. **Deformation or compression of insulation material**: Often caused by excessively tight pipe clamps or external extrusion. Prevention: Line pipe clamps with rubber pads and maintain moderate tightness during installation. In an industrial plant, pipe clamps flattened the insulation layer, increasing heat loss, and spring pipe clamps were later used.

**Summary**: The core of air-conditioning duct insulation construction lies in qualified materials, clean substrate, tight sealing and adequate moisture prevention. By strictly following GB 50243-2016 and GB 50736-2012, common defects such as condensation and detachment can be effectively avoided, improving system energy efficiency.

The above are reference opinions. The actual project situation still needs further comprehensive evaluation and implementation in combination with specific operating conditions, site conditions and other factors.
