When selecting chillers for a five-star hotel, what are the respective applicable scenarios for magnetic levitation centrifugal chillers and screw chillers?

I am an HVAC expert. The selection of chillers for a five-star hotel is a core part of system design and directly affects annual air-conditioning energy consumption, operational stability, and investment payback period. Magnetic levitation centrifugal chillers and screw chillers differ significantly in performance characteristics and application scenarios, and the selection must be based on a comprehensive consideration of the hotel's load characteristics, climate conditions, and O&M strategy.

First, according to Article 8.2.1 of the Code for Design of Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning of Civil Buildings GB 50736-2012, chiller selection should be "determined through technical and economic comparison based on factors such as building load characteristics, energy conditions, and operating strategy." The load of a five-star hotel has the following characteristics: low guest room load during the day and high load in public areas (lobby, banquet hall); stable guest room load at night with some public areas partially closed; and long periods of part-load operation during the transition seasons.

**Applicable scenarios for magnetic levitation centrifugal chillers:**
1. **High part-load energy efficiency requirements**: Magnetic levitation compressors use oil-free bearings, and IPLV (integrated part load value) can reach above 12-15, far exceeding screw chillers. Article 4.2.10 of GB 50189-2015 Design Standard for Energy Efficiency of Public Buildings requires the IPLV of chillers to be no lower than Grade 1 energy efficiency. Magnetic levitation centrifugal chillers are highly efficient at both high load rates (70%-100%) and low load rates (10%-30%), making them especially suitable for low-load nighttime operation in hotels. For example, a five-star hotel in Shanghai has a load rate of only 20%-30% during the transition seasons (April and October); after adopting magnetic levitation centrifugal chillers, annual cooling power consumption was reduced by about 35%.
2. **Low noise and vibration**: Magnetic levitation bearings have no mechanical friction, operating noise is below 70dB(A), and vibration is less than 0.05mm/s, complying with the noise limit requirements for guest room areas in GB 50118-2010 Code for Sound Insulation Design of Civil Buildings (nighttime ≤35dB(A)). This is particularly suitable for hotels where the plant room is adjacent to guest rooms or located on the roof.
3. **Long-term O&M advantages**: The oil-free design eliminates oil circuit maintenance and reduces downtime. However, note that magnetic levitation centrifugal chillers have high water quality requirements and require an efficient water treatment system (such as an electronic descaling instrument + automatic backwash filter).

**Applicable scenarios for screw chillers:**
1. **Stable operation at medium and high loads**: Screw chillers can achieve a COP (coefficient of performance) of 4.5-5.5 at 60%-100% load rates, suitable for the hotel's summer peak load (such as a full banquet hall and outdoor temperatures above 35℃). For example, a five-star hotel in Guangzhou has a summer peak load of about 2000RT and uses three screw chillers in parallel, with a single-unit COP ≥5.2 and stable operation.
2. **Projects sensitive to investment cost**: The initial investment of magnetic levitation centrifugal chillers is 30%-50% higher than that of screw chillers. For renovation and expansion projects or hotels with limited budgets, screw chillers offer outstanding cost-effectiveness, with a payback period usually of 3-5 years.
3. **Strong adaptability to extreme conditions**: Screw chillers allow a large cooling water temperature difference (4-10℃), while the condenser inlet water temperature of magnetic levitation centrifugal chillers needs to be controlled within 18-35℃; otherwise, surging is likely to occur. In dry areas of the northwest (where the cooling water temperature difference can reach more than 8℃), screw chillers are more reliable.

**Comparison of actual cases:**
- Case A (an ultra-luxury five-star hotel in Shenzhen): two 800RT magnetic levitation centrifugal chillers + one 300RT screw chiller were adopted. The magnetic levitation units handle 75% of the load of guest rooms and public areas, and the screw chiller is used for peak cooling supplementation in the banquet hall. After two years of operation, the annual integrated energy efficiency ratio EER reached 6.8, saving 28% energy compared with the traditional centrifugal chiller scheme.
- Case B (a resort hotel in Sanya): the original design used four 500RT screw chillers. Due to frequent start-stop under ultra-low load in the transition season (only 15%), compressor damage occurred. It was later retrofitted with two 250RT magnetic levitation centrifugal chillers + one 300RT variable-frequency screw chiller, which met the peak demand and optimized part-load efficiency.

**Summary**: The selection of chillers for a five-star hotel should follow the principle of "efficient complementarity"—magnetic levitation centrifugal chillers should lead part-load operation (especially in transition seasons and at night), while screw chillers should handle peak loads and extreme conditions. When the two are configured in parallel, the control system must be used to achieve optimized load distribution among units, and the cooling water temperature control strategy must be set strictly in accordance with Article 8.2.3 of GB 50736. The above are reference opinions. The actual project situation still needs further comprehensive evaluation and implementation in combination with specific operating conditions, site conditions, and other factors.
