Basic principles and code basis for vertical zoning design

The core purpose of vertical zoning design for hotel water supply systems is to control the static pressure at each water use point within a reasonable range, avoiding pipe bursting, damage to water fixtures, and water resource waste caused by overpressure. According to Article 3.4.5 of the Standard for Design of Building Water Supply and Drainage GB 50015-2019, the static pressure at the most unfavorable point of water supply fittings in each zone should not exceed 0.45MPa, and under special circumstances should not exceed 0.55MPa. For residential and hotel buildings, the water supply pressure at the service pipe should not exceed 0.35MPa. Zoning pressure control requires comprehensive consideration of building height, municipal water supply network pressure, rated working pressure of water fixtures, and other factors. When building height exceeds 100m, a mechanical floor or refuge floor should be provided every 40-50m for the arrangement of intermediate water tanks and transfer pumps. The parallel zoning method is suitable for hotels with building height not exceeding 120m, where each zone is equipped with independent variable-frequency water supply equipment operating without mutual interference; the series zoning method is suitable for super high-rise hotels, utilizing mechanical floors for pressure relay transmission, which can effectively reduce pump head and energy consumption. The code also requires that after zoning, the static pressure at the lowest sanitary fixture water distribution point should not be less than 0.10MPa to meet basic usage requirements.

Variable-frequency constant-pressure water supply equipment configuration and selection

The variable-frequency constant-pressure water supply system is the core equipment for hotel water supply vertical zoning, consisting of pump units, pressure stabilization tanks, variable-frequency control cabinets, pressure sensors, and piping accessories. Pump selection should follow the requirements of Article 3.8.3 of the Standard for Design of Building Water Supply and Drainage GB 50015-2019: the number of duty pumps should not be less than 2, and the number of standby pumps should not be less than 1, i.e., one duty one standby or two duty one standby. Pump flow rate is determined by the maximum hourly water consumption on the maximum day of the zone, and the head is calculated by the pressure required at the most unfavorable point of the zone plus friction and local head losses. Variable-frequency speed control technology enables automatic adjustment of pump speed according to changes in water consumption, achieving significant energy savings. The following points should be noted during equipment selection: (1) The pump performance curve should be of the flat type with a wide high-efficiency range; (2) The pump body and impeller material should be no less than 304 stainless steel; (3) The motor protection rating should be no less than IP55, with insulation class F; (4) The frequency converter should have PID closed-loop regulation function with pressure stabilization accuracy of ±0.01MPa. Case studies show that variable-frequency constant-pressure water supply can save 30%-50% energy compared to traditional high-level water tank supply.

Pressure reducing valve installation and pressure management technology

Pressure reducing valves are key equipment for controlling water pressure on overpressure floors in vertical zoning. According to Article 3.4.7 of GB 50015-2019, pressure reducing valves should be installed on service branch pipes or zoned water supply risers, with the downstream pressure regulation range preferably 0.15-0.25MPa. Pressure reducing valve selection requires consideration of nominal pressure, nominal diameter, pressure reduction ratio, and flow coefficient Cv value. For hotel projects, adjustable pilot piston pressure reducing valves or adjustable diaphragm pressure reducing valves are recommended, featuring stable outlet pressure, low head loss, and long service life. When installing pressure reducing valves, note the following: (1) A Y-type strainer should be installed upstream of the pressure reducing valve, with mesh size not exceeding 0.5mm; (2) Pressure reducing valves should preferably be installed in groups, one duty one standby, for easy maintenance; (3) Each pressure reducing valve group should be provided with a bypass pipe and valves; (4) The downstream pressure gauge accuracy should be no less than Class 1.5, with a range of 1.5-2 times the downstream pressure. For floors where overpressure exceeds 0.45MPa, two-stage series pressure reduction should be adopted to ensure pressure reduction effectiveness.

Energy saving and economic analysis of vertical zoning design

Reasonable vertical zoning design is of great significance for energy saving in hotel operations. Studies show that water supply system energy consumption accounts for approximately 8%-12% of total hotel energy consumption. Through vertical zoning optimization, pump head can be reduced by 20%-35%, directly reducing motor operating energy consumption. The economic analysis of zoning design should comprehensively consider three dimensions: initial equipment investment, operating energy consumption, and maintenance costs. Taking a high-end hotel with 200 guest rooms as an example, a reasonable vertical zoning scheme can save approximately 50,000-80,000 yuan in annual electricity costs, with an investment payback period not exceeding 3 years. In addition, the use of high-efficiency pumps (energy efficiency class IE3 and above), variable-frequency speed control technology, and optimized pipe network layout can further enhance energy saving effects. Article 5.2.3 of the Assessment Standard for Green Building GB/T 50378-2019 explicitly identifies the rationality of water supply system zoning as a control item for green building assessment. It is recommended to use BIM technology for hydraulic calculations and energy consumption simulation during the schematic design stage to optimize the zoning scheme.
