Spacing requirements between water supply and drainage pipes and distribution boxes/cabinets

Spacing control between water supply and drainage pipes and distribution boxes/cabinets is an important measure to prevent electrical safety accidents. Basic spacing requirements: Horizontal spacing — the horizontal clear distance between water supply and drainage pipes and distribution boxes/cabinets (distribution boxes, control cabinets, terminal distribution boxes, etc.) shall not be less than 500mm. When pipes are at the side of distribution boxes/cabinets, the horizontal distance from the outer wall of the pipe (including insulation layer) to the outer surface of the distribution box/cabinet shall be ensured to be no less than 500mm. Vertical spacing — water supply and drainage pipes are strictly prohibited from passing above distribution boxes/cabinets (including horizontally laid water supply and drainage pipes and vertically laid drainage risers). When water supply and drainage pipes pass below distribution boxes/cabinets, the vertical clear distance from the top of the pipe (including insulation layer) to the bottom of the distribution box/cabinet shall not be less than 300mm (and pipes shall not pass directly beneath the distribution box; an offset of more than 200mm shall be applied). Cause analysis for insufficient distance — common causes include limited space in fit-out works resulting in little room for pipe adjustment, structural beams and columns restricting pipe avoidance, and pipeline coordination not being fully considered during the design stage. Protective measures for insufficient spacing: When the horizontal spacing cannot meet the 500mm requirement (minimum acceptable 300mm), a waterproof partition (1.5mm galvanized steel plate or stainless steel plate, width not less than pipe outer diameter + 200mm, height not less than distribution box/cabinet height) shall be installed between the distribution box/cabinet and the pipe. The partition shall be securely fixed with a smooth surface. When pipes must pass above distribution boxes/cabinets (strictly prohibited; should be avoided at the design stage), the pipe route must be changed (pipe elevation adjustment shall begin 10m before the distribution box to route around it; turning or crossing directly above the distribution box is not permitted). Pipe leakage protection — when water supply and drainage pipes are near distribution boxes/cabinets, pipe joints (especially threaded and clamp connections) shall not be located directly above or within 500mm to the side of distribution boxes/cabinets. Pipe joints shall be located away from distribution boxes/cabinets (distance not less than 1000mm). Pipe insulation — when air-conditioning water pipes or hot water pipes (with higher or lower temperatures) are close to distribution boxes/cabinets, the insulation layer shall be enhanced (thickness increased by 50%), and a waterproof layer (aluminum foil facing or 0.5mm aluminum plate) shall be provided on the outer surface of the insulation layer to prevent moisture absorption and condensation dripping.

Spacing requirements between water supply and drainage pipes and cable trays

Spacing control between water supply and drainage pipes and cable trays is a frequently concerned matter in MEP installation. Reasonable spacing can effectively prevent the impact of pipe leakage on cable tray cables. Basic spacing requirements: Horizontal spacing — when water supply and drainage pipes (including insulation layer) are laid parallel to cable trays, the minimum horizontal clear distance shall not be less than 300mm (when water supply and drainage pipes are above the cable tray, the spacing shall be increased to 500mm). Vertical spacing — water supply and drainage pipes above cable trays shall be absolutely avoided (pipes must be ensured to be below or to the side of cable trays), because pipe leakage will drip directly onto the cable tray. When water supply and drainage pipes are below cable trays, the vertical clear distance shall not be less than 100mm (to facilitate opening of cable tray covers for maintenance). Crossing spacing — when water supply and drainage pipes cross cable trays, the pipes shall pass below the cable tray (passing above the cable tray is not permitted), and the vertical clear distance at the crossing shall not be less than 100mm. Treatment for insufficient spacing: When the horizontal spacing cannot meet the 300mm requirement, a metal partition (1.5mm galvanized steel plate, height not less than cable tray height + 100mm, width not less than pipe outer diameter + 200mm) shall be installed between the pipe and the cable tray. The partition shall be fixed to the side wall or brackets (fixing point spacing not greater than 500mm). When it is unavoidable for pipes to pass above cable trays (in very rare cases), a double-layer waterproof drip tray shall be installed below the pipes (width not less than cable tray width + 300mm, length covering the pipe-tray crossing range + 200mm). The tray shall be made of 1.5mm stainless steel plate, with a DN20 drain pipe routed to the nearest floor drain or drainage pipe. Additional protective measures include: using waterproof-type cable trays (with waterproof covers and sealing strips), sealing cable tray cover overlaps with waterproof sealant; no cable joints (intermediate joints) shall be provided in the cable tray section below pipes to reduce short-circuit risk; cables in the cable tray shall be flame-retardant/fire-resistant type (WDZ series) to enhance cable risk resistance.

Spacing requirements between water supply and drainage pipes and electrical equipment rooms

Electrical equipment rooms (substation/distribution rooms, ELV equipment rooms, fire control rooms, ELV closets, etc.) have strict restrictions on water supply and drainage pipes, because the electrical equipment in these rooms is of high value and has stringent safety requirements. Substation/distribution room: water supply and drainage pipes (including water supply pipes, drainage pipes, fire pipes, etc.) are strictly prohibited from passing through the room, and are likewise strictly prohibited from passing through the floor slab above the substation/distribution room. The distance from water supply and drainage pipes to the exterior wall of the substation/distribution room shall not be less than 1000 mm (to prevent water from rushing into the substation/distribution room when a pipe bursts). The fire extinguishing system in the substation/distribution room shall adopt a gas fire extinguishing system (such as heptafluoropropane) or dry powder fire extinguishing system; water sprinkler or water mist fire extinguishing systems shall not be used (water and electrical equipment cannot coexist). ELV equipment room (ELV closet, ELV riser shaft): water supply and drainage pipes (including fire pipes) are likewise strictly prohibited from passing through the room, water supply and drainage pipes are strictly prohibited from being laid above the ELV equipment room, and no water supply and drainage pipes shall pass within 3000 mm of the exterior wall (including the floor slab above) of the ELV equipment room (to prevent safety accidents). ELV equipment rooms usually adopt gas fire extinguishing or pre-engineered fire extinguishing devices. Fire control room: water supply and drainage pipes are strictly prohibited from passing through the room, the floor of the fire control room shall be 50-100 mm higher than adjacent areas (to prevent external water from flowing in), and a water-retaining threshold (height not less than 50 mm) shall be provided at the doorway of the fire control room. Automatic sprinkler heads shall not be installed in the fire control room (a gas fire extinguishing system shall be used), and sprinkler pipes are strictly prohibited from passing through the fire control room. Handling of special cases: when, due to building constraints, water supply and drainage pipes must pass near electrical equipment rooms, the following measures shall be taken: pipes shall be installed on the outside of the exterior wall without passing through the room (laid along the exterior wall surface), double-layer pipes shall be used (inner pipe + outer protective sleeve, both made of stainless steel), pipe joints shall be located away from the electrical equipment room (spacing not less than 2000 mm), waterproof sleeves or pipe trenches shall be provided outside the pipes (trench size not less than pipe outer diameter + 200 mm*200 mm, with sealed cover plates), and water-retaining thresholds and water baffles shall be provided at the doorway and exterior wall of the electrical equipment room.

Spacing requirements between water supply and drainage pipes and switch/socket junction boxes

Spacing control between water supply and drainage pipes and switches, sockets, and junction boxes is a detail issue requiring key attention during the interior fine decoration stage. Spacing requirements: horizontal spacing — the horizontal clear distance between water supply and drainage pipes (including insulation layer) and switches/sockets/junction boxes shall not be less than 150 mm (when the pipe outer diameter is large, such as DN50 and above, the spacing shall not be less than 200 mm). Vertical spacing — the vertical clear distance between switches/sockets (usually installed at a height of 1.3 m-1.4 m) and water supply and drainage pipes above or below shall not be less than 100 mm (when the pipe is directly above the socket, the spacing shall not be less than 200 mm and the pipe shall not have joints directly above the socket). Protection for insufficient spacing: when the spacing between switches/sockets and water supply and drainage pipes is insufficient (such as when a water pipe concealed in the wall crosses an electrical conduit), one of the water pipe or electrical conduit shall be relocated (relocating the water pipe is preferred, because the concealed depth of a water pipe in the wall is usually less than that of an electrical conduit, and after cement mortar covering, the protection of the water pipe is inferior to that of the electrical conduit). When the spacing cannot be met and relocation is not possible, an insulating sleeve (PTFE sleeve, wall thickness 2 mm, length not less than 200 mm) shall be added over the water pipe, and insulating tape shall be wrapped around the water pipe (3 layers, waterproof and insulating). Wall waterproofing enhancement — when water supply and drainage pipes share a wall with switches/sockets (such as water pipes and electrical conduits in bathroom walls), wall waterproofing shall be enhanced: the application height of the wall waterproofing layer shall exceed the installation height of switches/sockets by 300 mm (e.g., if the socket installation height is 1.3 m, waterproofing shall be applied up to 1.6 m), the waterproofing layer thickness shall not be less than 1.5 mm (polymer cement waterproof coating), and the perimeter of the installation holes for switch/socket junction boxes shall be tightly sealed with waterproof sealant. Installation precautions — water supply and drainage pipes and electrical conduits in walls shall be laid in separate grooves (double-groove laying), the spacing between pipe grooves shall not be less than 100 mm, and water and electrical conduits shall not be mixed in the same groove.
